Gr. 4^-6. Similar in focus and format to Morrison's anthology of baseball poems, At the Crack of the Bat (1992), this collection showcases 42 short poems about basketball. Poets include Mel Glenn, Eloise Greenfield, Lillian Morrison, Walter Dean Myers, Jack Prelutsky, Mary Swenson, and former Seattle Supersonics forward Tom Meschery. Varied in style, some of the poems are tributes to superstars, some reflect the experience of playing the game, and others celebrate the swish of ball through net. In a reversal from most poetry books, the illustrations nearly outshine the verse. Bill James' black-and-white, shaded pencil drawings and color-shot pastels capture movement as well as subject and composition. The lively lines and vibrant colors reflect the quickness of the game and the many moods of the verse. A choice collection for those who find poetry in basketball, but don't expect to find basketball in poetry. Carolyn Phelan
