A mother rabbit tells her son a story about a rabbit's adventure in the wild and it turns out to be a story about him

PreSchool-K-- This is a delightful reissue of Little Rabbit, the High Jumper (William Scott, 1957; o.p.), with new illustrations. A mother rabbit tells her child of the adventures of a great jumper. The fictional cottontail jumped so high that he went beyond the mountain, explored new clover fields, frolicked in the sun, and eventually came home not by jumping over the mountain, but by using his wits and hopping around it. As he happily listens to his mother, the youngster chimes in with "just like me," and she uses these same words to express how glad the high hurdler's mother was to have her child home again. The ink and watercolor pictures spill across the pages in soft greens and pastels. The warm brown rabbits beg to be petted. Text is artfully arranged opposite each full-page illustration with flowers, clouds, and leaves stretching out of the borders into the narrative. This lovely story belongs on the shelf with Margaret Wise Brown's The Runaway Bunny (HarperCollins, 1942) and Ann Tompert's Little Fox Goes to the End of the World (Scholastic, 1984). --Beth Tegart, Oneida City Schools, NY
