Reviews

PreSchool-Grade 2-When the circus comes to town, the little bear discovers that his father was a clown in his younger days. After retrieving his costume and props from the attic, Papa demonstrates that he still remembers his routines. This fortuitous coincidence comes in handy when they discover that the show is about to be canceled because the clown has quit, and "Always Leave 'Em Laughing Brown" agrees to replace the missing participant. Patrick is ecstatic until he realizes that he will not be starring in the circus, too. His temper gets the better of him, and he sulks. As Papa performs, though, a naughty monkey steals his hat, so Patrick seizes this opportunity to get into the act. While the plot is a bit forced and the ever-changing cast of characters makes it a bit difficult to follow, the graphic layout is intriguing. Many of the busy, detailed cartoons of the animals are reminiscent of comic-book art with their dialogue balloons, insets, and vignettes. Although most of the pictures are too small for group viewing, the book may work for one-on-one sharing with fans of Patrick and the Big Bully (Hyperion, 2001).
