The editors of Rolling Stone, ever masters of bombast and the taking of current phenomena entirely too seriously, dish up a heaping helping of U2-concerned views and reviews. If you like rock journalism, you'll like this book, the first in a planned series from "the original rock & roll magazine." It chronicles the Irish band's career from the early days through "the textural and emotional and cinematic U2" of the Joshua Tree album era to the superstar status the band now enjoys. Included are the results of top-l00-album polls and readers' preference polls from the years covered (1984-93) as well as tidbits from the "Random Notes" section of Rolling Stone and interviews with band members Bono and the Edge. Certainly, U2 is a rock band worthy of serious attention in library collections, and for better or worse, Rolling Stone's self-conscious offerings add up to a comprehensive means of providing that attention.
