Few people speak with more authority about nearly every aspect of running a business than Mark McCormack. With a balanced sense of purpose and a resonant, accessible speaking voice, he shares his experience running a sports marketing and athlete/performer agency, and gives the most intuitive and concise advice on management that I've ever heard on audio. He covers the basics of managing in a far-reaching but also very personal way. The way he shares his stories and insights makes you feel that he's holding nothing back as he takes you through one fascinating story after another to illustrate his advice. This program, as well as his audios on communication, negotiating, and selling, ought to be required listening for anyone working in any size organization. McCormack follows his best seller, What They Don't Teach You at Harvard Business School (LJ 8/84), with this third in a series designed around the anecdotes, examples, and insights of this successful executive. Skeptical of management or leadership fads and trends, McCormack turns to more fundamental aspects of management, such as dealing with people, managing money, focusing on future growth, hiring the right person, and rewarding people appropriately. All these insightful personal thoughts are based on his strong principles honed over his years of success with sports marketing and athlete management and may seem opposed to the thinking of many of today's New Age of business gurus. His personalized approach to meetings, managing creativity, organization charts, performance reviews, core business interests, and leadership counterbalance the alternative research-based focus of other writers in this heavily saturated genre. Because of his prior notoriety, look for this to be a most-requested item. Recommended for most public libraries.
