9780788022470: Bound By Love: Christians In Community

Bound by Love: Christians in Community was written to inspire hope for the Church of the twenty-first century, not only as an institution, but as the Body of Christ. During his ministry, one of Jesus main goals was to establish Christian communities that witnessed God s saving love for all people. Jesus formed these communities link by link, inviting people to join him in the ministry of the gospel. Jesus invited Andrew, who invited his brother, Peter. Then Jesus invited Philip, who invited Nathanael. Together with the other eight disciples, they formed the first of many Christian communities that followed. These communities were the beginning of the Church as the Body of Christ, a Church in a society that was not bound by love, but by hostility, greed and revenge. These communities grew in spite of persecution and repression. Today the Church is called to remain faithful to the model of Christian community. In Bound by Love we see the Church as more than an institution. We learn that in order to remain vital we must look beyond the institution to the first communities of faith that Jesus teachings inspired. As Christian community, congregations are linked to Christ and to each other. Today, the Church faces problems. Statistics show decreased commitment and giving, and we encounter controversy on social justice issues. Amidst all of these challenges, however, Bound by Love urges the Church to go forward by looking back to the indestructible roots of Christianity, roots that define the Church as the Body of Christ, as community, as a Church for all time.

Review:

Out of a deep love for Christ s church and with concern for today s challenges, Horst and Janet Bandle provide a lens to see what is central for its renewal. Christian community centered in Jesus Christ and living in love and peace provides an understanding of what is foundational for Christian life today. This is a book that can provide important discussion in congregations and among leaders.

Assistant to the ELCA Presiding Bishop for Ecumenical and Inter-Religious Relations --The Rev. Donald J. McCoid

Bound by Love notes a common problem of mainline denominations: declining membership. Pastors and parishioners have many books and methods available for addressing concerns of decline but little improvement is seen. The answer may be as basic, but timeless, as the authors suggest -- adapting the model of the early church that survived and grew as community -- a church where Christians, in response to God s love, care for each other physically as well as spiritually.
Kenneth E. Shuman, Pastor
The Lutheran Church of the Galilean
LaPlace, LA --Kenneth E. Shuman, Pastor

We re all individualists these days -- even in our religion. Here s a timely reminder that being Christian means more than that. We are meant to be part of a community of love and without that community dimension, we are not really living the Christian life. Bound by Love makes a persuasive case that we are not just better Christians when we live that way -- we are also happier people. This is exactly the message we all need to hear right now and it s presented in a way that reaches out equally to the mind and to the heart.
