About the Author

Annie Dalton is the author of Tilly Beany and the Best Friend Machine and several other books about the irrepressible Tilly Beany. Belinda Downes is one of England's most successful embroidery designers. After she spent a year as artist-in-residence at the Embroiderers' Guild, her first book, Silent Night, a book of Christmas carols, sold all over the world. A Stitch in Rhyme, a book of nursery rhymes, followed, along with Every Little Angel's Handbook in 1977. She has also been commissioned by many magazines and has exhibited her designs around the world.

Reviews

Grade 1-4-Sprightly retellings of eight stories about princesses from Europe, Asia, and Africa aim toward accessibility, softening harsher details from older versions and adding conversational asides to explain characters' behavior. Familiar tales include "The Twelve Dancing Princesses," from the Brothers Grimm, Andersen's "The Princess and the Pea," and Perrault's "Sleeping Beauty." Princesses from Norway and Russia, India and Zimbabwe are also represented. This slightly oversized volume is generously illustrated with fabric collages embellished with embroidery. The pages are subtly textured, like linen cloth. Sometimes the art covers a full page, or moves across a double spread. More often, smaller stitchery pictures decorate the pages in a pleasing, open design. The colorful fabric art, depicting various countries and cultures, manages to define character; set the scene; and convey emotional tone, depicting tenderness, humor, and romance. In a foreword, the artist describes her research, materials, and technique. The reteller explicates the stories in an afterword, and provides source notes. An attractive addition to folktale collections.
