Sister Wendy Beckett studied for her degree in English at St. Anne's College, Oxford. After teaching in South Africa, she returned to England in 1970 to take up the life of a contemplative nun. An art lover all her life, Sister Wendy Beckett is a member of the Notre Dame order, a teaching order of nuns. She studied for her degree in English at St. Anne's College, Oxford where she graduated with highest honors. After teaching in South Africa, she returned to England in 1970 to live a fully contemplative life under the protection of a Carmelite monastery in Norfolk, where she lives in seclusion to this day. A lifelong art lover and recognized art historian, Sister Wendy began serious study of the subject in 1980. She writes for many art magazines and her wildly popular BBC television series, Sister Wendy's Odyssey, Sister Wendy's Grand Tour, and Sister Wendy's Story of Painting are seen on PBS.
Inspired by the profound spiritual power of great art, Sister Wendy Beckett shares with us the wisdom and insight gained from her years of silent contemplation. Taking the four themes of Silence, Peace, Love, and Joy, she shows how calm reflection brings us to a more complete understanding of our circumstances and ourselves. Sister Wendy's delightful personal meditations are accompanied by her own selection of paintings from across the centuries.
Her years as a nun have given Sister Wendy a profound appreciation of the many layers of sacred meaning to be discovered in art. From the well-loved Renaissance masters to today's abstract painters, Sister Wendy explores the different messages to be found in these great works. Inspirational and informative, this precious book is the perfect companion in times of quiet contemplation.
Sister Wendy Beckett has gained widespread recognition for her knowledge and insight into paintings and is well known for her BBC and PBS television art series. She is the author of several noted books, including Sister Wendy's Story of Painting (a fascinating guide to 800 years of Western painting), Sister Wendy's Book of Saints and A Child's Book of Prayer in Art, all published by DK Publishing.
