When I was a kid, we seldom had company over, and my mother never threw parties. Although she'd followed the pre-inflation life path of many women in the late 1950s and '60s by majoring in home economics in high school (yes, they had majors in high school back then), she absolutely hated entertaining. She cooked beautifully: moist, juicy turkey at Thanksgiving, dozens of unique cookies at Christmas, a home-baked ham at Easter, and nutritious, home-cooked meals all year long. However, all this cooking was "wasted" on just my father and me—and a few relatives on holidays.
I grew up attending other people's parties, wondering why we never had any of our own. Sure, I'd get a small birthday party or two, but nothing like my other friends had: roller-rink birthday parties, group outings to the park, and sleepovers with 12 or more girls. I felt woefully neglected!
It wasn't until I was an adult that I realize why Mom hated entertaining so much. It's hard work! Invitations, menu planning, shopping, decorating, cooking, hosting, cleaning up—and you have to be charming and gracious the whole time. The real kicker, though, is the expense. Parties can eat a hole in your budget, often costing far more than you'd planned. There really isn't a lot to get excited about—I can see why Mom preferred to be a guest!
However, parties don't have to be a royal pain and a financial drain. It is possible to entertain on a budget, even if you have a busy schedule and limited experience with cooking and hosting. I learned to do it, and so can you.
My friends first dubbed me "cruise director" many years ago, because my favorite thing to do is organize events. I love to have friends over for dinner parties, throw picnics at the park and on the beach, organize group outings to restaurants and other entertainment venues, and launch reading groups and craft parties. To me, the more the merrier! The only problem is that when more people are involved, the work gets that much harder. To become a successful cruise director, you have to learn a few basic skills.
What Plan a Fabulous Party In No Time Is About—and What It Is Not
The In No Time series was created for busy people who want to develop certain skills or tackle a long-overdue project, but who don't have a lot of time or money to spend on complex processes and complicated directions. The series title has two meanings: You want to spend very little time planning and throwing your party, and you don't have a lot of time to figure out how! This book will address both aspects of the In No Time series goal, giving you simple instructions in a quick, concise format you can breeze through in no time.
If you want to learn to become a professional event planner, a master chef, or a fabulous interior decorator, you will find many detailed books on these subjects; however, this is not one of them! Plan a Fabulous Party In No Time is not a detailed guide to every kind of party imaginable, but rather a concise guide to throwing the best party, with ideas about how to adjust the perfect party to almost any scenario.
In a fun and fast format, this book will guide you through different aspects of party planning, including
Determining your personal party style
Throwing a fantastic party on any budget
Deciding the theme for your party and planning accordingly
Selecting the right location for your party
Creating ambience with music and décor
Making a guest list and sending out invitations
Planning a menu and shopping for the right ingredients
Preparing ahead for the big day
Managing your party from beginning to end
Learning to mind your party Ps and Qs—and helping your guests out of sticky situations
Dealing with the "after party"
Ensuring your guests have an utterly fabulous time
Because I taught myself the fastest, easiest, and least expensive way to host gatherings, you'll reap the benefits of my knowledge as you read this book. You won't find any extravagant suggestions or overly complicated instructions, but the very best way to host the very best party for you.
Who Should Read This Book
I wrote this book with my friends, family, and colleagues in mind: interesting people with average incomes and moderate culinary skills who love to throw a great party when the mood strikes them. If that description fits you, then you are reading the right book! In more detailed terms, this book was meant for readers who
Love to throw parties, but find they often spend more time and money than they'd like
Have never thrown a party before in their adult lives, but are looking forward to learning how
Have thrown dozens of successful parties, but are always looking for a great tip or a new idea
Are devoted guests (folks like Mom) who never want to throw a party as long as they live, but love to help their friends and family entertain
Some people will quickly realize that they need more resources than this book provides. For example, if your home is on the messy side, you might want to read a few organizational books and turn your "before" into an "after"—before you host your first party. If your cooking skills are nonexistent, you might want to supplement your reading with a basic cooking class. If you don't know the difference between vodka and rum, you'll want to take a tour of your local liquor superstore.
At the end of this book, I've included a number of resources and recommendations for further reading, so don't worry overmuch if you don't understand a particular direction. I promise that this book won't leave you feeling lost in the world of partydom.
How to Use This Book
Although I have written this book from beginning to end, you don't have to read it that way. You should read the first few chapters, though, so you can learn some basics about easy entertaining. Once you have mastered the fundamentals, you can skip ahead and read about the type of party you want to host. You'll want to skim through the sections on different kinds of parties, and you'll certainly want to review the appendixes, which contain some important tools for party preparation. However, this book, like all the books in the In No Time series, was meant to be a reference guide, not a novel to be read from start to finish (although you will not be penalized for doing so, should you wish!).
This book is divided into four main parts:
Part I: Know Your Party Self shows you how to differentiate the kinds of parties that fill you with joy from those that fill you with dread. You'll learn how to select dates, themes and venues, plan around your budget and schedule, create physical moods that suit different events, plan entertainment and events your guests will love and ensure everyone has a great time—including you!
Part II: The Perfect Party takes you through a complete party, giving instructions on making a specific budget, menu, guest list and shopping list, making a to-do list and planning ahead, managing your many tasks on the day of the party, learning to delegate, guiding your party from the moment the guests arrive to the hour they depart and cleaning up after everyone is gone.
Part III: Variations on a Theme shows you how to incorporate the "perfect party" detailed in Part II into the specific event you want to host: holiday parties, occasion parties, and theme parties, providing menu suggestions, entertainment and activities ideas, and decorating themes for each type of party.
Part IV: Party Planning Tools includes kitchen equipment, pantry products, f...
