Total Yoga: Earth, the most basic workout within the three-part Flow Series, draws upon the foundations of Hatha Yoga. This 45-minute program introduces the fundamentals of this ancient practice to a variety of students through detailed instruction on ujjayi breathing and sun salutation. Teachers Tracey Rich and Ganga White keep the asanas simple, and demonstrate alternative postures for participants with compromised backs and necks. The cueing is both informative and clear with valuable safety information about body alignment and form. A series of standing postures evolves to the floor with a minimal amount of inverted poses and spinal rotation. The hamstrings get some intensive stretching through asanas such as the seated forward fold, while the core muscles of the abdomen and lower back are strengthened through isometric poses. Meditation closes out the complete workout. This is a strong and thoughtful regimen that will be welcome for the first time student and intermediate practitioner alike. The combination of exceptional content and application make Earth a substantial place to begin any yoga practice. --Olivia Voigts
