Grade 6-8-- A survey of the geography and history of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) characterized by clear organization and concise writing. There is a logical emphasis on the period of Japanese annexation (1910-1945), World War II, and the Korean War, all events that led to the division of the ethnically and linguistically unified Korean peninsula. Accurate, current statistical data is difficult to obtain, and readers need reminding that such figures are often estimates; a perusal of sources reveals several discrepancies, such as the population of the capital city of Pyongyang. More than half of the illustrations are progaganda photos contributed by the DPRK and are interesting for what they reveal about North Korean values. While this volume is useful for middle school report writers, older students will want to refer to more detailed accounts. --Susan Middleton, LaJolla Country Day School, CA
