From School Library Journal:
Grade 6-10-- Beginning with the slave trade in Africa and ending with the 1988 presidential campaign of Rev. Jesse Jackson, Smead examines the impact which Afro-Americans have had upon American history and culture. He does not minimize or gloss over the harsh conditions which many Afro-Americans faced. For instance, his description of the "middle passage" (the transportation of slaves from Africa to America) is one of the most compelling and realistic accounts found in books for this age group. In addition, he describes the various ways in which Afro-Americans have combatted racism. The major chapters in Afro-American history are covered (slavery, Civil War, Civil Rights Movement, etc.). However, information is also provided in depth on some subjects which usually are given only cursory attention, such as Marcus Garvey and the Harlem Renaissance. The bibliography includes a number of university press books and other books which may be too advanced for the intended audience. Of the black-and-white photos, some appear to be rare ones which enhance the book. There are also some color photographs of performing arts groups or acts. A good, basic account of Afro-American history. --Jeanette Lambert, LaVega School, Waco, Tex.
