So varied are the dozen women writers discussed in this volume that neither their genre nor their gender can be said to hold them together," states Bloom in his introduction. What does hold this book together is a format that provides a compelling insight into each author and her work: a two-page biographical sketch, a complete bibliography, and an eclectic group of critical extracts from books and journal articles. Alcott, Greenaway, Burnett, Nesbit, Potter, Montgomery, Travers, Wilder, and Fitzhugh are included, as are three writers who are still publishing (L'Engle, Le Guin, and Paterson). Most of the critical excerpts are written by recent critics and academics; in some cases, they span a number of years. One of the Alcott entries, for example, is a review of Eight Cousins written in 1875 by Henry James, who called the book an "ill-chosen sort of entertainment to set before children." Though it's not a comprehensive look at these authors, this volume can provide interesting perspectives. There are a few annoying editorial slips. For example, Montgomery's date of death is incorrectly given as 1940, while a quote from one of her final letters is dated 1941. This is best used as supplementary material in a professional collection where demand for information on children's book authors is high.AConnie Rockman, Stratford Library Association, CT
