From the Black Americans of Achievement series, this biography focuses on entertainer Gregory Hines. Performing professionally with his brother from the age of six, Hines developed his own style as a tap dancer, then moved into acting, garnering leading roles on Broadway and in the movies. De Angelis acknowledges the personal low points as well as the professional high points in Hines' life, but the overall tone is upbeat as well as informative. Black-and-white photos illustrate the text. Appendixes include a chronology; lists of film, stage, and television performances; and a bibliography of books, articles, and reviews. Not an essential purchase, but a nice addition to collections. Carolyn Phelan
