Explores the 1996 explosion of a 747 jet plane off the coast of Long Island, New York, focusing on the investigation which led to new safety recommendations for fuel tank systems. From School Library Journal:
Grade 8-10-Friedrich recounts the fate of the Boeing 747 that exploded into pieces over the ocean off Long Island just 12 minutes into its planned voyage on July 17, 1996. This account details the investigation into the destruction of the aircraft, examining the leading theories of what caused the disaster in minute detail. The people and agencies involved in the recovery of bodies and plane parts, those dealing with the victims' families, and government officials and members of the press are identified, and their activities are followed throughout the text. The author reveals the mistakes that were made as well as aspects that were well handled. Descriptions of some of the victims, their families, and memorials bring touches of poignancy to an otherwise dry recitation. Some other air disasters are mentioned and a significant portion of the final chapter is allotted to the activities of air-safety advocate Mary Schiavo and of the National Air Disaster Alliance Foundation to effect changes in the industry. A detailed index and targeted lists for further reading, including Web sites connected with the disaster, allow deeper exploration into the subject.
