Review:

In the IDIC world of Star Trek, the Ferengi are deliciously flawed. They were supposed to be the big bad villains of TNG but somehow evolved into misogynistic oo-mox-craving little trolls. They skulked about wearing what looked like dinner napkins stuck to the backs of their heads--which was convenient as they also had a reputation for devouring their business partners. On top of everything else, nobody liked them and they ate worms. Then along came DS9 and Ira Steven Behr got his hands on them, and suddenly being a Ferengi got a whole lot better.

"Rules of Acquisition" is Tootsie meets Yentl with just enough jealousy, deceit, and blackmail to make it fun. Add the first appearance of tongo and some buff--and truly silly--new aliens to the mix, and the game is afoot. Wallace Shawn returns as Grand Nagus Zek, the very epitome of greed; and Hêlene Udy is funny and wise as the gender-bending Pel. Quark (Armin Shimmerman) displays true honor--and a heart of gold-pressed latinum. Please take note: the Ferengi uncover the existence of the Dominion in this episode. We're talking the Dominion here; and nobody gets blown up! Behold the power of Commerce. Great Ferengitude, inspired make-up, hysterical ear-hair comb. A lot of fans originally watched this episode only under threat of death-- and came away loving it. "Rules of Acquisition" is truly an underappreciated gem. --Kayla Rigney

From the Back Cover:

Grand Nagus Zek (Wallace Shawn) selects Quark (Armin Shimerman) to negotiate the Ferengi expansion into the Gamma Quadrant. During the negotiations, he comes to rely on the assistance of a young Ferengi waiter Pel (Helene Udy), who is hiding a surprising secret. As the negotiations grow in intensity, their relationship becomes more complex.

In a shocking revelation, Pel tells Dax (Terry Farrell) that he is actually a she-and that she is in love with Quark. When a jealous Rom (Max Grodenchik) discovers that Quark has broken one of the "Rules of Acquisition"-taking advice from a woman-he threatens to expose them both and blow the most profitable opportunity in Ferengi history!
