This book is being published by the National Geographic Society in conjunction with the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the White House Millennium Council. Hillary Rodham Clinton has written the foreword, and the introduction is by journalist Ray Suarez. Essays by five notable writers--Thomas Mallon, Francine Prose, Phyllis Theroux, Henry Petroski, and Ian Frazier--are accompanied by descriptions by Dwight Young of 43 places, artifacts, and documents targeted by the National Trust for restoration and preservation. Each entry contains data on origin, present condition, and restoration and preservation plans. But it is the 150 photographs that make the book so absorbing. Featured places and items include the Manzanar Internment Camp in California, where 10,000 Japanese Americans were unjustly held during World War II; Harriet Tubman's home in Auburn, New York; Babe Ruth's scrapbooks in Cooperstown, New York; and the yacht Coronet, built in the 1800s for an oil tycoon, which is anchored off Newport, Rhode Island. This book is quite a treasure in and of itself. George Cohen

Save America's Treasures is the name given to a nationwide historic preservation project directed by the White House Millennium Council and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Besides publicizing the program, this guide also serves to inform readers about the types of projects being undertaken and some history behind many of the landmarks. Well-written essays, together with high-quality color photography, convey the value of recognizing and preserving pieces of the nation's past. A few examples discussed are the Harriet Tubman House, Valley Forge, and Thomas Edison's invention factory. A list of projects organized by state completes the book, and a foreword by Hillary Clinton adds some charm. Despite being a little too promotional, the book contains important information about the scope of the project and the kinds of repairs being done at some restoration sites. Saving America's Treasures is nicely designed for the general interest reader and is recommended for all public libraries.DEric Linderman, East Cleveland P.L., OH
