The major shift in the study and practice of preaching in the 1970s and 1980s, labeled the New Homiletic, turned toward the hearer. The purpose of preaching focused less on persuasion and more on transformation, less on asserting religious truths and more on offering an experience of the gospel. Instead of viewing language as referential, its creative, evocative nature began to be emphasized. Thus homiletical strategies utilizing induction, celebration, story, narrative structures, and moves replaced a deductive, propositional approach to preaching.

About the Author

O. Wesley Allen Jr. is Assistant Professor of Homiletics and Worship at Lexington Theological Seminary, Lexington, Kentucky. An ordained United Methodist elder with a doctorate in New Testament, his books include Reading the Synoptic Gospels: Basic Methods for Interpreting Matthew, Mark, and Luke (2000), The Homiletic of All Believers: A Conversational Approach (2005), and Preaching and Reading the Lectionary (2007). He is editor of the Fortress Press series Elements of Preaching, author of a recent title in that series, Determining the Form, and a contributor to New Proclamation.
