9780800697457: Redeeming the Gospel: The Christian Faith Reconsidered (Studies in Lutheran History and Theology)

For many people today, the Christian gospel as traditionally articulated has become irrelevant and meaningless. This, combined with developments in biblical scholarship and Christian thought since the time of the Protestant Reformation, makes it necessary to rethink our understanding and conceptualization of the gospel. Redeeming the Gospel examines the central themes traditionally associated with Lutheran theology, including especially law and gospel, the work of Christ, and the doctrine of justification by grace through faith, in order to deconstruct and reconstruct our understanding of the gospel so that it may be proclaimed in a way that responds to the needs and concerns of our world today while nevertheless remaining grounded in biblical teaching.

About the Author:

David Brondos is Professor of Theology at the Theological Community of Mexico, an ecumenical consortium of seminaries in Mexico City, where he teaches systematic theology and biblical studies. An ordained ELCA minister, he is author of The Letter and the Spirit: Discerning God's Will in a Complex World (Lutheran Voices, 2005); Paul on the Cross: Reconstructing the Apostle's Story of Redemption (2006); and Fortress Introduction to Salvation and the Cross (2007).

Review:

"Deftly and artfully Brondos steers the main streams of the Lutheran understanding of the gospel and places them in a discerning yet constructive dialogue with other strands of the Christian tradition, from the Scriptures through contemporary theology. The book offers challenges and suggests proposals that any responsible teaching and preaching cannot but heed." --Vitor Westhelle, Professor of Systematic Theology, Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago

"Brondos' attempt to articulate an authentically Lutheran theology for the twenty-first century is provocative for readers across the theological spectrum. Some will be unsettled by Brondos' frank conclusion that several traditional Lutheran doctrines are unscriptural and therefore no longer tenable. Others will be surprised that he makes constructive use of central Lutheran themes and insights at all. Whether Brondos has gone too far or not far enough in reinterpreting Lutheran theology for Christians today, his latest book is one that people will be talking about!" --Kathryn A. Kleinhans, Professor of Religion, Wartburg College, Waverly, Iowa
