Reviewed with Linda Shands' Blind Fury.
Gr. 4-6. A new series features 15-year-old Wakara Sheridan, of American Indian and Irish descent, who lives with her family on a ranch in present-day Oregon. In Wild Fire, Wakara is still grieving over her mother's death from a car accident a few months earlier. Helping her two brothers and her father get their lodge ready for summer visitors, Wakara sees how her mother's death is affecting each of them in a different way. She becomes friends with the new housekeeper, Anne Lightfoot, a Nez Perce from the reservation in Idaho, as well as Colin, a teenager hired to help with the horses, but she doesn't fully embrace their faith in God until she and her six-year-old brother narrowly escape a deadly forest fire. In Blind Fury, Wakara and her family are back at their ranch for the school year. Glad to have Anne as their live-in housekeeper and happy to see the family becoming strong once again, Wakara risks her life to find her brother and father when a sudden blizzard traps them in the mountains. Although Anne seems too good to be true and Wakara's struggles are too easily solved by her faith, the series has just the right amount of action and romance. Karen Hutt
