"I'm sure he would have been embarrassed by the accolade of the 20th centuries greatest preacher, and I'm not sure how you would determine this, but listening or reading the sermons of James Stewart should rank as a worthwhile task. Reading of course, may not provide a full picture of a sermons content, since the emotion and nuance carried by oratory is not evident. This, the main thrust received is biased toward the cognitive, whilst the convenience of a book allows departure if distracted and frequent return when re-reference is desired, both of which I succumbed to. Stewart has a narrative style when working through a text, structuring his lessons in a manner that tells both the exegetical story behind the passages, whilst fluidly translating the points into a modern context. This is can be a rare balance. His tone is not without conviction, but he is gentle in any critique he gives. Although many of the issues he alludes to belong to an older time, the principles he addresses are sufficiently broad to be relevant to modern readers. This said, while there is much to commend, I'd say the sermons would test the patience of today's congregations - they would mostly exceed 20 minutes and probably wouldn't adapt to PowerPoint presentations very well. Most people, convinced or not, with the willingness to give thoughtful consideration to Christianity would find something worthwhile in reading some of Stewart, although the books may need to be purchased second hand." -- Angus Mcfarlaine
