Reviews

The Italian Communist Party is known for its size, its criticism of the Soviet Union, and its contribution to "Euro communism . " This book is perhaps the finest, and certainly the most up- to-date, account of Soviet-PCI rela tions available in English. Urban finds the origins of Italian communist inno vation in the 1920sthe impact of Fas cist repression, the leadership of To gliatti, and resistance to being "Bolshevized" by Stalin. Periods of PCI conformity are less well ex plained. The author has an excellent command of Italian sources; and intra party debate about Soviet demands and conflicting opportunities is well described. The book is above all about Italian communism; the Soviet side is less complete. Recommended for aca demic libraries and other strong inter national politics collections. Zachary T.
