Text: English, French (translation)From Library Journal:
In this useful survey of Greek slavery, published for the first time in English, history professor Garlan has written a "handbook" for all interested in ancient servitude. Rather than competing with M.I. Finley's Ancient Slavery & Modern Ideology (Viking, 1980), Garlan takes a different approach. He examines "chattel slavery" and the theories by which the Greeks justified their enslavement of other peoples, and discusses the condition of slaves in various city-states. Recommended, though one wishes there were a full bibliography. Jackson P. Hershbell, Univ. of Minnesota, Minneapolis
