Synopsis
First full-scale history of the Trans-Siberian Railroad up to the time of the Russian Revolution. The author details the motives for construction of the Trans-Siberian, analyzes the governmental and public debate, and chronicles the bureaucratic infighting that plagued the project for years. After covering the activities of the Committee of the Siberian Railroad in stimulating the settlement of Siberia, he examines the railroad's construction, operation, management and impact. He explores the role of the vast Siberian frontier in Russian history and reassesses the methods and accomplishments of Sergei Witte, the Russian statesman most responsible for the railroad. Throughout, the author compares the railroad with similar projects in Europe and America in order to place the subject in its proper context. Illustrated with black and white photos. 240 pages with index.
