The legendary characters of the Trojan War, Susan Woodford reminds us, captured the imaginations not only of Homer, the Attic tragedians, Aeschylus, Virgil, Ovid, and many other writers, but of countless Greek and Roman visual artists as well.

A vibrant retelling of the Trojan myths, this handsomely illustrated book brings to life for today's readers both visual and literary traditions. Woodford is an engaging guide, as concerned with nuances of human experience as she is with aesthetic detail....As unforgettable images in story and picture reflect back on one another, Woodford offers us a new appreciation of the range of the emotional and sensuous expression―and also of the humor―of classical culture.

About the Author:

Susan Woodford was born and educated in the USA, where she received her BA (summa cum laude) from Harvard and her MA and PhD from Columbia. Having moved to England with her husband and daughter in 1971, she teaches art history and lectures at the British Museum. In addition to scholarly articles, she has written four more books for the general reader: "The Parthenon", "The Art of Greece and Rome" and "Looking at Pictures", published by Cambridge University Press, and "An Introduction to Greek Art", published by Duckworth.

Review:

"Few books on mythology, or on ancient art, provide such good reading as Woodford's lively treatment of the myths and tales associated with the Trojan War. In an understated manner, with excellent narrative and amusing treatment throughout, she regales the reader with the wonder of the stories and the humor of the situations in which both gods and people find them- selves. Carefully chosen pictures, drawn largely from Greek vase painting, but also from Roman wail paintings, mosaics, and sculpture, make a rich tapestry of illustrative material." ―Classical World (1997)
