This is the fourth book in a six-book series about four generations of the Morgan family living, fighting, and thriving amidst a turbulent Texas history spanning from 1845 to 1896. Although a series, each book can be read on its own.
In 1875 Buck Morgan rode into Mason County with the Texas Rangers to quell the violence stirred up by the actions a vigilantly mob. The Hoo Doo (or bad luck) War erupted as suspected cattle rustlers were murdered by an angry mob. Former ranger, Scott Cooley, gathers a gang to seek vengeance for the murders.
Suspected of cattle rustling, Leta Derrick’s husband was murdered by the mob a year earlier. Now she is siding with the rogue ranger, Scott Cooley and refuses to help Buck Morgan stem the tide of violence.
Will their actions fuel the fire of vengeance? Or will Buck and Leta strike an accord that leads to more than just peace?

Buck’s ability to remain impartial and bring the murderer to justice has Leta anxious. As she struggles to keep her ranch afloat, Buck offers to help – all the while searching for the truth. A tentative trail emerges … one forged by respect and bound by vengeance and forgiveness.
Doubt meets faith, and fear gives way to faith in the Morgan family.

In this Christian western, fourth in the Texas Trails series, Leta Derrick seeks justice in the wake of her husband’s lynching. Franklin’s story is drawn from a central Texas range war known both as the Hoo Doo War and the Mason County War, and she’s faithful to what’s known. German American ranchers fought the original, mostly Anglo, settlers over who was rustling cattle and who exacted frontier justice afterward. Leta knows Germans killed her innocent husband, but her love interest is Texas Ranger Buck Morgan, a German American from southeast Texas. He’ll help her rein in her wayward son, Andy, who’s riding with the notorious renegade ranger, Scott Cooley. However, Cooley’s actions—and the war itself—mostly occur offstage, Buck is impossibly nice, and Leta is unrelentingly brave and long-suffering. Certain sequences, such as Buck’s gentle breaking of a colt for Leta’s younger son, stand out, but veteran western readers will tire of Leta’s Bible reading and praying—not to mention her endless cooking. On the other hand, Christian-romance readers will be satisfied. --John Mort
