Describes the childhood and youth of Thomas Jefferson in the context of the eighteenth-century Virginia society in which he lived

Grade 5-8 Hilton covers Jefferson's life from birth to the age of 19. She also includes a brief summary of his life and achievements after that time, a discussion of "Whatever Happened to" some of the people and places mentioned in the book and a chronology of Jefferson's adult life. Hilton's writing flows smoothly; her book, however, is difficult to classify. It is not a true biographythere is a great deal of dialogue and fictionalizing, a number of inaccuracies and, due to the book's restricted scope, several occurrences are given more importance than they deserve. On the other hand, Hilton fails to provide as comprehensive a view of life in the 1740s and 1750s as she does for other periods in her lengthier studies We the People: the Way We Were 1783-1793 (1981) or The Way It Was1876 (1975, both Westminster Pr). The focus is quite insular, dealing literally with Jefferson's "world" and generally ignoring life in the rest of the colonies. And even in describing Jefferson's world, Hilton is selective; topics such as clothing, holiday celebrations and customs, crime and criminals, city life, traveling and love and marriage are either overlooked or treated so briefly that no useful information is conveyed. Old-fashioned, unattractive drawings are scattered throughout. Children would be better off with either a full-scale biography of Jefferson or a book along the lines of We the People, covering colonial life and customs as a whole. Hilton's offering may be too limited to be worthwhile. Ann W. Moore, Lane Road Library, Columbus, Ohio
