Grade 5-9-- An account of this intriguing man's life and accomplishments told with exciting pacing and engrossing anecdotes. Wormser editorializes his assessment of Pinkerton's actions, but these comments are backed up by descriptions that show the subject to be a person of extremes and of intense character traits. Readers get a good understanding of these qualities. Some grizzly details of a vigilante gang's lynching of the Reno gang in the 1860s are included. Black-and-white historical photographs and drawings both amplify and add interest to the readable text. Chronology is sometimes hard to follow in the text, for incidents are occasionally identified by date, and other times not. Because of Pinkerton's involvement with outlaw gangs in the West, labor unions in the East, and his fight against slavery, among other passions, readers are treated to a fast-paced, absorbing look at this complex, unique man and to a vivid view of U. S. history during his lifetime. --Jacqueline Elsner, Athens Regional Library, GA
