Life in quiet Clod's Corners changes drastically for Higbee and his best friend Quincy when the very nasty Striker kids move in and Higbee decides to make them the target of a grand Halloween prank.

From School Library Journal:

Using familiar Soup (Knopf) patterns, Peck creates likable Quincy Cobb, who is frequently led astray by his friend Higbee Higginbottom. In rural Clod's Corner around the 1930s, Quince and Hig basically reflect the solid values of their community. They love their teacher for her devotion to them and admire the librarian's ability to organize civic activities. Placing a snake in a bully's lunch box, planning to liberate a pumpkin, and looking forward to a Halloween party are all part of a normal day until the Striker family arrives. Strongly reminiscent of the Herdmans in Barbara Robinson's Best Christmas Pageant Ever (Harper, 1972)--but not quite as funny--the Strikers are the worst disciplined children imaginable. When they put a homemade "torture chamber" to use, Hig decides it is time for action. Peck's tendency to saddle nearly all characters with alliterative and strongly descriptive nomenclature can be irritating--a bully named Bruto Bigfister, a librarian called Miss Booky--but unsophisticated readers may find this quite comedic. The characters are interesting and true enough, and the well-paced plot and splashes of humor will urge even reluctant readers to race to the finish.
