Grade 6-8-- Every 16 years, a pair of twins is born in the city of Tereu: one handsome and golden-haired, the other dark and ugly. Rabon, 15, was raised by a foster father in a small town, and ends up on a quest to the city with his dark twin, both learning about their heritage along the way. This derivative fantasy is competently written, but no more--characters are cardboard cutouts that are either good or evil, with no middle ground (and no real female characters, either). Rabon is the only one who seems to have any true feelings. What is going on in the city is obvious to everyone except the twins, and the only involvement readers have with self-centered Rabon is the impulse to give him a whack. He does grow up some by the end, but not enough. So many better books have been written on the theme of "different is not always evil" that there is no need to enumerate them--any would be an improvement on this one. --JoAnn Rees, Sunnyvale Public Library, CA
