In the tradition of The Velveteen Rabbit, with adorable classic art, comes the story of Darcy Brewster, one brave teddy-bear cub, who accepts a real challenge―to be a true friend to Damian, a boy who has a long history of destroying his toys. Ready, willing, and able to love and comfort Damian, even if it means putting his own fur on the line, Darcy manages to capture Damian's heart and imagination, as well as that of any reader.

TED DEWAN has written and illustrated many picture books, both fiction and nonfiction, including Inside the Whale and Other Animals and Crispin, the Pig Who Had It All. He lives in Oxford, England, with his wife, Helen Cooper, and their daughter.
Darcy, a soldier bear on a mission to become Damian’s “One True Bear,” finds innovative ways to keep the young boy from playing too rough. Darcy simply reminds Damian of all the things a bear should do for a boy that won’t be able to be done if he gets ruined: “Please . . . don’t pull off my arms. I need my arms to hug you.” “Please . . . don’t take out my stuffing. I need my stuffing to love you with all my heart,” and so on. The colorful illustrations portray a realistic, high-energy boy—one who plays vigorously with his toys yet learns to value and care for this one. The ending is particularly satisfying: Damian eventually outgrows playing with bears, and Darcy lies under the bed for years, until a new need for him arises: adult Damian takes Darcy with him on his own mission, to rescue a little girl from a flood, and comfort her.
