Newest volume in the acclaimed Pillar New Testament Commentary series

The question that Paul set before the ancient church in Corinth -- Do you not recognize that Jesus Christ is in and among you? (2 Cor 13:5) -- remains a critical question for the church today. This commentary by Mark Seifrid seeks to hear Paul’s message afresh and communicate it to our time.

Seifrid offers a unified reading of 2 Corinthians, which has often been regarded as a composite of excerpts and fragments. He argues that Paul’s message is directed at the “practical atheism” of the Corinthian church -- the hidden heresy that assumes God’s saving work in the world may be measured by outward standards of success and achievement.

Like all of the Pillar volumes, Seifrid’s commentary on 2 Corinthians offers careful grammatical analysis and exegesis with clear pastoral application.

About the Author:

Mark A. Seifrid is the Ernest and Mildred Hogan Professor of New Testament at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky, and the author of Christ, Our Righteousness: Paul's Theology of Justification.

Review:

Bible Study Magazine
"Seifrid's new commentary will be valuable for a wide audience, but especially students and scholars interested in the original meaning of the letter. His contributions to the field of Pauline theology — and justification in particular — help this volume stand out from other commentaries on the letter."

James W. Voelz
-- Concordia Seminary, St. Louis
"If you value detailed, sustained exegesis coupled with deep theological analysis, then this commentary is for you. This is Mark Seifrid at his very best -- grappling intensely and respectfully with the content and progression of St. Paul's thought, and bringing it alive for the reader today. . . . Kudos!"

Douglas J. Moo
-- Wheaton College
"Mark Seifrid takes a distinctive approach to the commentator's task: rather than cataloging and evaluating the opinions of modern scholars, he chooses to focus on his own fresh, stimulating, and very definite interpretation of the letter, its theology, and its significance for fundamental issues of hermeneutics."

David E. Garland
-- George W. Truett Theological Seminary
"Seifrid brings extraordinary erudition, exegetical precision, and astute theological reflection to the interpretation of this poignant letter. He makes Paul's parental love for his problem church come alive and presents his word of the cross so that it also speaks to present-day realities. . . . An outstanding addition to an excellent commentary series."

Timothy George
-- Beeson Divinity School, Samford University
"Mark Seifrid has given us here a model commentary on Paul's most passionate, intensely personal letter. Refusing to dice up 2 Corinthians into disparate fragments, this volume presents a coherent if afflicted and sometimes distraught apostle committed to the fulfillment of the mission he has received from the risen Christ. At once a superb work of erudition and devotion."

Oswald Bayer
-- University of Tübingen
"Seifrid has discovered Paul's gospel afresh in 2 Corinthians. . . . I hope that through this commentary many others will discover the message of the gospel anew. Tolle, lege!"

Andrews University Seminary Studies
“An impressively thorough commentary, which offers both judicious comment and useful documentation. This is an outstanding addition to an excellent commentary series. It deserves to be ranked among the leading commentaries on 2 Corinthians.”

Journal of Lutheran Mission
“Mark Seifrid has provided us with an excellent commentary on Second Corinthians demonstrating how the apostle engages in Witness, Mercy, and Life Together. All three are evidenced in Second Corinthians, and Seifrid is a sure-footed guide to exploring their meaning and implication for the Church’s mission.”
