Reviews

Photography as documentationcrisp, clear, well-composed and on these pages beautifully reproducedis what Stimson achieved in rich quantity from his base in Cheyenne, Wyo., beginning around 1890. The American West was settling down to "commonplace" growth and development. We see railroad trains and accommodations, broad agricultural prairies and farm equipment, both horse-drawn and mechanized, thriving sheep and cattle spreads, rising oil rigs and rugged mining and smelting grounds, Buffalo Bill's resurrected cowboys and Indians, emerging tourist interest in scenic wonders, and early 20th century urbanization. Junge traces the parallel development of Stimson's handiwork and of the American Northwest corner he chose to live in. Background information accompanying the 227 plates helps make this volume an excellent addition to U.S. social and photographic history. December 6
