Kindergarten-Grade 2 Pirate Jupiter, a tough-looking bulldog, and his crew of nine "Moondogs" search a colorful galaxy for treasure in Rubel's counting book. While plundering a Planet Small spaceship, the pirates find a map which leads them to a buried treasure. Along the way greedy Jupiter manages to leave behind his crew members one by one. After stops on Puzzle Planet, Lollipop Planet, Flower Planet, Swamp Planet, Big City Planet and a satellite (where they are attacked by Space Cats), Jupiter arrives on Rainbow Planet and digs up the chest. He is then surprised to find the entire crew had been picked up by First Mate Maxine and is there with him. The text is flat and a bit long for a counting book, but young children will enjoy listening to the story, counting the Moondogs and finding the clues. Rubel's use of black ink and colored markers is well suited to the text, and the Moondogs are a humorously varied assortment of identically dressed canines. Individual readers will be amused by the funny details found on each page. The book is accompanied by a punch-out mobile of the spaceship and crew.
