Eight different habitats, from tropical forests to polar regions, are each represented in four short descriptions of various endangered animals. The brief text gives a physical description of each animal and also cites causes for its declining population. Warm watercolor illustrations of the animals discussed border the bottom of each double-page spread, while illustrations of other endangered species edge the rest of the page. A pocket on the inside front cover features a map of the world, keyed to the text, and holds a press-out "ark" and 32 pairs of animals. Although the subject matter, illustrations, and paper model will attract youngsters, the format of this book is a major drawback for circulating collections. Animals in Danger (National Geographic Society, 1978) uses brief text and topnotch photos to describe the habits and behavior of many endangered species. Lynn Stone's Endangered Animals (Childrens, 1984) also presents endangered species from all over the world to young readers. --Barbara B. Murphy, Shaler Area School District Libraries, Pittsburgh
