PreSchool-- Intricately detailed watercolor on wood illustrations enhance this collection that will appeal more to adoring adults than to infants and toddlers. Enchanting newborns and young children appear on each page, blond and blue-eyed for the most part, with the exception of one charming Native American mother and child. The hand-written music and words (occasionally difficult to read) are surrounded by clever borders, each symbolic of the song's origin and meaning. The selections are from the U. S., England, and Europe, and include such familiar titles as "Hush Little Baby" and "Golden Slumbers"; more unique tunes are "An Iroquois Lullaby" and "A Humorous Lullaby." The single note arrangements are simple enough for nonmusicians to plunk out on a piano or keyboard. The complete lyrics are included at the back of the book. An additional purchase for public libraries to be placed next to Jane Yolen's Lullaby Songbook (HBJ, 1986). --Karen K. Radtke, Milwaukee Public Library
