Henry, the smallest kitten in the litter, pretends he is as big and brave as a tiger

PreSchool-Grade 1-- While pretending that he is a big, fierce tiger, Henry the kitten climbs too far up a tree and has to be talked down by his family. He ends up taking a nap, and dreams of being a real tiger. The text is not out of the ordinary, and is even a little too cute, but the pictures do much to rectify this. O'Brien's big beautiful watercolor-and-ink drawings are reminiscent of Ruth Heller's work in clarity and color, but with more detail--readers can count every hair on Henry and his siblings. A kitten's-eye view of the world is depicted, where sparrows are large and a friendly dog's head is gigantic. This offering would do very well in a storytime setting. However, the kittens are stereotypes: the males, Henry and Joseph, have sensible names and are active; the females are Tizzy and Dizzy, and their contribution is to squeal about Henry's bravery. Even if these are only cats, this is the 90s! A book with beautiful pictures--but caveat emptor ! --JoAnn Rees, Sunnyvale Public Library, CA
