From School Library Journal:

PreSchool-Grade 1?A silly story about two small animals who try to go into space and end up underwater instead. The entire premise is shaky at best, with these two junkyard critters building a bird-shaped spaceship out of discarded parts: a can, a piece of plastic for a bubble hatch, pieces of wood and feathers for the wings, and a funnel for the head and beak. Pushing off from a tree, they plunge so deeply into the sea that they are soon surrounded by wondrous creatures and plants. But they still think they are in space. Even when their ship starts to flood and a giant fish grabs them, brings them back to the surface, and flings them ashore, they still don't realize where they've been. Effective use of color highlights some striking artwork, especially in the underwater scenes with all manner of coral, star fish, sea horses, and other marine life filling the pages. Some young readers may forgive the lapses in the story to enjoy the beautiful illustrations and may even sympathize with these two wayward passengers. But for tales of the sea that combine the themes of exploration and discovery with beautiful pictures, try Leo Lionni's Swimmy (Knopf, 1963) or Marcus Pfister's The Rainbow Fish (North-South, 1992).?Jane Marino, Scarsdale Public Library, NY

From Publishers Weekly:

Aptly titled, this book is significantly more impressive for its eye-catching visuals than for its slightly cutesy story line. Wrought from a variegated and lustrous palette, Collicott's winsome gouache paintings show two animal friends, Motley and Fuzzball, in the throes of an aeronautical adventure-or so they think. The two build a "junkbird" from objects collected from their junkyard home, and hope to reach the stars. But, when their craft takes an unexpected plunge, they unknowingly end up in the sea. Through the window, the wide-eyed friends spy a host of iridescent starfish, which they mistake for the celestial twinklers. Collicott adroitly pulls off the kid-pleasing contrivance of letting readers in on a secret the characters don't know. But the plot pales in comparison to the beautifully molded figures in her radiant compositions, especially alluring in their playful portrayal of underwater life. Ages 3-7.
