9780803719767: Hurricane Henrietta

Hurricane Henrietta is famous for something she's never done: She's never cut her hair. It billows like a sail. Little kids play in her hair, her brother's guinea pig gets lost in it, and it starts a tornado at the vegetable market, where rutabagas and eggplants rain down on the startled shoppers! Henrietta enjoys her fame, but now it's time for Safari Camp. How will her mountainous mane fare in the woods? Will it fit in the tent? Will birds and squirrels build nests around her ears? Finally Henrietta visits Francine at the Bald Eagle Hair Salon. The floor becomes a sea of wavy tresses, but at last Henrietta is pleased with her new look, and Harry the wig salesman will have a new line of Henrietta's Wonder Wigs. Lindsay Lee Johnson deftly weaves imagination and realism to create a fast-paced, laugh-out-loud story. Wally Neibart, an illustrator for forty years, brings Henrietta's billowing hair to life, making her a legend in her own time. This is a first children's book for both.

From School Library Journal:

Kindergarten-Grade 2-Henrietta has never had her hair cut. Her long, wavy tresses attract attention wherever she goes, but they also cause trouble. Things get caught in her hair as she walks by, and she can't find a bathing cap big enough to cover her locks. Worst of all, her scout-troop leader has issued an ultimatum: "Something must be done about that hair" before camp begins, forcing her to agree to a cut. As a crowd gathers to see the results, Henrietta is thrilled to exclaim, "It's still me!" Donating all of the trimmings to a wig salesman, she goes off to camp to pursue normal activities. The humorous text is accompanied by wonderfully exaggerated illustrations done in pencil and watercolor. The long hair entangled with squirrels, birds, and fruit is an amusing sight, and the wide-eyed expressions on the faces of all the townspeople add to the fun. This lighthearted tale is sure to delight children as they experience Henrietta's turmoil and empathize with her love of attention. Pair it with Tricia Tusa's Camilla's New Hairdo (Farrar, 1991) for a rollicking, far-fetched storytime filled with hair-raising escapades.

From Publishers Weekly:

In Johnson and Neibart's first children's book, Henrietta Harrison isn't having a bad hair day so much as a bad hair life. Her uncut locks begin to dominate her town of Bald Eagle Falls, both literally and figuratively. While the attention flatters her at first (at school, for instance, the kindergartners beg to play in her mane, because it's "more fun than the jungle gym"), things get out of hand as her billowing hairdo swallows up everything from yo-yos to her brother's guinea pig, and sends friends and neighbors scurrying for cover. Still, Henrietta holds out, sleeping with her hair "curled around her like a nest" and enduring a trip through the car wash for a shampoo. But when her summer camp plans are threatened ("You'll come home with birds and squirrels nesting around your ears," warns her mother), Henrietta finally submits to the shears. Visually, bedlam also breaks loose in Neibart's pencil and watercolor illustrations, comprising caricatures that mirror the wild exaggerations of the text. While author and artist score some comic points in this exceedingly tall tale, readers may eventually tire of what boils down to one lengthy joke. Ages 4-8.
