How have the political parties of the liberal democratic states responded to women′s demands for political representation? To answer this question, the authors examine 11 democratic states, relating what has happened to theories of representation and gender politics. They trace developments in party systems as political parties have implemented new systems of candidate selection, new means of policymaking, the reform of internal structures and the establishment of new structures. The interaction between gender and party politics is shown to be of direct importance to the understanding of the political status of women.
This is the only source of its kind on this important topic and makes a valuable contribution to the litera

`A useful comparative study which contributes much both methodologically and factually to current explorations of women′s political presence. As such it establishes a significant framework for future research in this underdeveloped area of political study′ - Political Studies
`For those teaching or studying the role of gender in contemporary politics this collection will be an invaluable source. It offers detailed and up-to-date accounts of developments in 11 countries, and, in extending the more usual European comparisons to take in Australia, Canada and the USA, it demonstrates the complexity of the party systems through which feminists are pursuing political change′ - Party Politics
`It is a model of what an edited collection of essays of this kind should be. The editors specify very clearly their agenda of inquiry, the contributions on individual countries stick closely to their brief and there are helpful overviews in both the introduction and the conclusion. All the contributors offer extremely business-like lucid and fully annotated accounts.... All in all, this is an extremely useful book, that I know I shall regularly consulting, for teaching and research purposes alike. Because both of its scope in terms of cross-national coverage and the kinds of information covered, and of the tight editing, it is not only a rich source of data but permits one to pursue many different lines of comparative inquiry. Finally, and from a feminist standpoint, the book has a generally encouraging message, in highlighting women′s continuous, if uneven, political advance, though it is also telling us 2You won′t get anything, if you don′t got on demanding it"′ - Democratization
`Joni Lovenduski and Pippa Norris have performed an undoubtedly useful task in bringing together for the first time accounts of women′s participation in the party political process in several countries, including Australia, Canada and the major EC and Scandinavian countries. In this and insofar as comparisons are possible it is informative′ - The Political Quarterly
