"The book deals with all the important and relevant aspects relating to value systems and organisational effectiveness. It discusses at length the Asian organisation value scenario, which has not been covered so systematically earlier. By any standard, it is a valuable addition to the literature on this subject." --The Journal of Entrepreneurship "This volume successfully questions the prevailing unicultural approach to organisations and offers many insights into the diverse realities of the organisational world. The various indigenous concepts, innovative methodological strategies and theoretical advances available in the volume make it an essential reading for the students of psychology, management and allied disciplines.... It brilliantly brings out the tensions between western and non-western value systems as related to work in the organisational context." --Trends in Social Science Research "The volume abounds in theories and analyses of sociocultural factors and their impact on productivity in organizations. It contains many lessons for businessmen and professionals." --Business Line "This impressive collection of essays examines the impact of culture, work values, and belief systems on management, organizational structures, and leadership. . . . All the papers postulate a clear relationship between the values cherished by the individual and his or her behavior in the workplace. . . . The book has a lot to offer serious students of management." --The Hindu The effectiveness of work organizations depends not only on investment and technology but equally on the attitudes and values of those who work in them. In fact, nations that have developed at a faster rate are the ones that have, among other things, found ways of incorporating social values in designing their organizations. This volume analyzes and examines the role of social values in the functioning of work organizations. The 20 essays comprising this book highlight the dynamic synthesis among social values on the one hand and organizational functioning and management practices on the other--in different cultural contexts. The contributors focus mainly on the "experiences" of developing and newly industrialized countries. With contributions from well-known behavioral and social scientists, this volume will be of considerable interest to students, teachers, and practitioners of management, organizational behavior, and social psychology.

`The topic of this book is timely, in that it is increasingly acknowledged that it is important to look at the issues of values and organizations... useful and interesting... there were nuggets of useful information especially for those studying cross-cultural values... it would be useful, with its emphasis on the Chinese approach to values theory, to anyone seeking to approach values research from a source that has been largely untapped by western authors' - Systems Research `The real value of the book... lies in its contribution to the debate about alternatives to western management theory/practice orthodoxy. It is the comparative analysis of such alternatives which offers learning potential' - Management Learning
