From the dust jacket: "Mr. Blagden covers the development of the [Stationers' Company] from its origins as a protective association of members of the book trade (printers, booksellers, publishers, bookbinders, and paper merchants), through its chartering in 1557, and into the period of its decline in and after the eighteenth century. Mr. Blagden deals with the normal facets of a City Company -- its organization and ceremonial, its charities and school, its Hall and outlying property, its provision of Lord Mayors; and with the changing pattern in the careers of Stationers -- taking up freedom, being called to the Livery, serving the offices and enjoying the benefits of membership. But the main emphasis in the book is on those aspects of the Company's development which are unusual or even unique, e.g. the 150 years' collaboration between the government and the Company in the control of printing; the growth of the idea of copyright from its invention by the Stationers; the battle for ascendancy in the Company between printers and booksellers; the story of the 'English Stock,' a trading organization in which members of the company could become shareholders.". 1977 reprint of the 1960 original.
