Book by Smith, Laurence D.

According to the received view on the matter, the neopsychological behaviorists Hull, Toman, and Skinner drew heavily in their theoretical reflections upon logical positivism. The current work is an antidote to that view. Smith shows convincingly that the positivists of the Vienna Circle had no influence upon the behaviorists during their formative years from 1925 to 1945. He establishes his view both by minute analysis of the relevant doctrines and by little known biographical data. Though well done, this is a very difficult work suitable only for scholars specializing in the history of science of that era. Sidney Gendin, Philosophy Dept., Eastern Michigan Univ., Ypsilanti
