Text: English, German (translation)From School Library Journal:
Kindergarten-Grade 2 A pack of wolves traveling south in search of food during a long, cold winter is forced to abandon the youngest wolf, who can't keep up. They tell him to go to the village for help. The little wolf is turned away by a tidy old woman, a busy man, and a frightened mother before collapsing outside a woodman's hut. The woodman takes the wolf in and warms and feeds him. Meanwhile the others, feeling guilty, each set out in search of the little wolf and end up at the woodman's home drinking tea and toasting the man who gave the little wolf shelter. This is a pleasant story, but it lacks excitement, and the translation is occasionally awkward. The climax is the wolf finding shelter, and the several pages describing the others looking for the wolf are anticlimactic and seem more useful for reinforcing a lesson about caring than in moving the story to conclusion. The illustrations are done in a folk-primitive style and use color effectively to contrast the frigid outdoors and the coziness inside. Schmid has used a Russian setting very nicely to create a warm, charming atmosphere for the text. Jane Gardner Connor, formerly at South Carolina State Lib . , Columbia
