Grade 7 Up-- All of the characters in these disquieting, disturbing, and somewhat distasteful stories are tormented in varying degrees--some to death--by their encounters with the supernatural. All are driven in some measure to test the power of the unknown; few have any chance against the capricious malevolence of the uncanny, and none escape unscathed. This bleak landscape, where neither goodness nor innocence triumphs over evil, is coupled with hypnotic storytelling that compells readers to turn the pages, regardless of their apprehension. Horror, like humor, is an idiosyncratic taste. The best stays with readers, chilling the mind long after the covers are closed. This book falls into that category. --Holly Sanhuber, Muskego Public Library, WI
