Consumers are increasingly eager to be involved in decisions about their health care. Lewis writes frankly and skeptically about surgical decision-making for patients and describes some common operations. This title is not comprehensive (there is little on pediatric or plastic surgery, for example), and readers may be frustrated by the doctor's rambling and anecdotal style. More hard data and statistics would be welcome, and more detailed descriptions of procedures and post-operative care and recovery would be helpful. Suitable for public libraries, but standard medical sources like Physician's Desk Reference will really suffice for most patrons' needs.
