From School Library Journal:

Kindergarten-Grade 3-- After an appetizing first day at school, goblin twins Gurgla and Blog enthusiastically rush home to begin their assignment--make a bowl of alphabet soup. A curious classmate follows the pair deep into the woods, where they greet their mother--an ugly green witch--and fire up the cauldron. As Zack observes from behind a ``poisonberry'' bush, the trio concocts the most abominable alphabet stew imaginable. Starting with ``ANTS'' for ``A,'' the twins throw in a variety of awful ingredients, including ``DUSTY DIRTY DANDRUFF,'' ``MIGHTY MOLDY MUSHROOMS,'' and ``TARANTULA.'' Unfortunately, Zack makes his presence known just as the cooks are coming to the letter ``Z,'' resulting in a frantic broomstick chase and a clever conclusion. Flavored with delightfully disgusting details, Gabler's humorous story evenly blends plot with an effective concept book. Watercolor cartoon illustrations feature green ghouls with fangs and bugged-out eyes. While sketches of appropriately lettered objects season the borders of each page, black-crayon lines create a frenetic mood that bubbles right along with the soup. A tasty tale for lovers of foul fare. --Joy Fleishhacker, New York Public Library

From Publishers Weekly:

Gabler's inventive and thoroughly puckish debut is grade-A gross-out material. Not only does it teach the ABCs--it makes even lima beans, liver and spinach begin to sound tasty. Green and gruesome twosome Gurgla and Blog, twin children of a witch, go to school like regular kids, but they have a unique approach to homework. Assigned to make alphabet soup, they tell mom to "get the cauldronsic ready" and begin adding nasty abecedarian ingredients: dusty dirty dandruff, flat fried frog, mighty moldy mushrooms, etc. Soon classic fairy-tale menace crops up--Will Gurgla and Blog really mix their classmate Zack into the brew simply because his name begins with Z? Gabler's illustrations, with their cartoony style and suitably Halloweenish hues (muddy browns, grays, greens and orange predominate) provide abundant kid appeal. (The book's frenetic, crowded pages, however, will no doubt limit its usefulness as a beginning alphabet book.) Although this all-in-fun narrative seems ideal for the Addams Family bookshelf, some may find it an acquired taste. Ages 4-8.
