Travel writer Hofmann does an excellent job of describing all that these Swiss cities have to offer in lodging, food, transportation, sightseeing, culture, sports, and more. Coverage of museums is comprehensive for a guidebook this size. Very few excursions from the cities are described, however. Costs are given in U.S. dollars, which can be misleading in times of fluctuating exchange rates. Hofmann's failure to mention the various transport passes available to foreigners is a notable drawback. Other guides (e.g., Fodor's '94 Switzerland , at $18 for the paperback) provide greater detail on the entire country and are a better value. (Maps not seen.)-- William R. Smith, Johns Hopkins Univ.
