Gr 5-7--All three of these series entries begin with a short introduction to the various forms of water on earth, followed by chapters on the specifics of each biome. Coral Reef explores the small, soft bodied animals that sit inside the hard limestone structures. While not as well illustrated as Sylvia A. Johnson's Coral Reefs (Lerner, 1984), the small full-color photographs and drawings in this book clearly portray reef inhabitants and structure. In Ocean, the Pacific, the Atlantic, the Indian, and the Arctic are briefly described, as are the five ocean zones. While experiments and activities are not the focus as in Joyce Pope's Seashores (Watts, 1985; o.p.), a few simple projects are included. Seashore focuses on North American seashores, and discusses the different types of shores. The adaptations made by the plants and animals that inhabit each of these biomes are also mentioned. Text boxes highlight certain specifics, e.g., sponges in "A Subject That's Full of Holes," (Coral Reef), buoyancy in "The Sinking Feeling" (Ocean), and the tides in "Your Life, The Moon and the Tides" (Seashore). Each book features up-to-date information on current events (e.g., the overfishing and subsequent threat of extinction of sharks, and the 1994 United Nations Law of the Sea Treaty) and a list of environmental organizations and companies.
