This rhyming, cumulative text about young animals getting ready to sleep is patterned after the Little Red Hen: “Down, down goes the sun, / And down in the sea, / Fish find a safe place to hide. / Who’s asleep? / ‘Not I,’ says the minnow.” The turtles, ducklings, bees, cats, birds, and caterpillars respond likewise. Sharp eyes will notice visual clues of a toddler’s chin and hand in the water in the first spread and his feet in the water and red sneakers on the ground in the next. When all the sheep go to sleep, the child’s mother asks, “Is anyone awake?” and a perky face wearing a lamb costume peeks around a tree—guess who?
